He has served Penn State since February 1996, first as Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations and since May 2006 as Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations.

Rod graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor of arts in English and minors in German and history, and he earned his master's degree in higher education administration from Indiana University in Bloomington.
